Ernst Veen, former director of the Nieuwe Kerk Amsterdam and Hermitage Amsterdam, initiated an inspiring concept in which he takes us to unique sculpture gardens around the world. Places that evolke a sense of wonder through spectacular, extraordinary and intriguing works of art in the most overwhelming nature. A perfect synergy between art and nature, sometimes created, sometimes caused by chance.

Ernst Veen has long been fascinated by the combination of art and nature. By organising exhibitions Veen has visited unique places throughout the world. In exceptional gardens full of art he wondered how art and nature can reinforce each other. This symbiotic wealth Veen could only keep in his memory, the works cannot be transported. This led to the idea to create exhibitions on film, Gardens of Wonder, in which Veen is the guide. This way Veen is able to show the artworks in the Netherlands in a different way than usual: through film.

In February 2014 Veen made the first pilot series on the Gibbs Farm in New Zealand. Five documentaries about other unique sculpture gardens in the world have been filmed:
- Storm King Art Center, Mountainville, New York, United States
- Fattoria di Celle, Santomato di Pistoia, Tuscany, Italy
- Centro de Arte Contemporânea Inhotim, Belo Horizonte, Brazil
- Château la Coste, Le Puy-Sainte-Réparade, Provence, France
- Ekebergparken, Oslo, Norway

The series will be broadcast on NPO2 on Thursday 21:20, starting November 3rd, 2016.
