National Military Museum

Experience concept - projectdevelopment

The Ministry of Defense is building a new Museum of Defense at the former air base in Soesterberg. The new museum will combine the holdings of the Delft Army Museum and the Soesterberg Military Aviation Museum and add a general defense theme. Outside the new building, there will be space for exhibitions and events.

The Government Buildings Agency (Rijksgebouwendienst) is managing the construction with a ‘DBFMO’. This means they are contracting a consortium to design, build, finance, maintain, and operate the museum. XPEX belongs to a consortium that also includes Volker Wessels, Facilicom, Hypsos, Rau architects and Karres & Brands landscape architects.

Our consortium is the first of three successful groups to get past the first round of bidding for this prestigious project. We have been asked to come up with a final building plan based on our reference projects. XPEX role is to develop a concept for the interior design of the museum and other visitors’ facilities as well integrating the surroundings, the building, objects, media, interaction, events, and facilities in the presentation. Developing the definitive plan is scheduled to take 14 months. After this, the Government Buildings Agency will make a final decision on which one of the three first-round bidders will win the contract to build the new museum.
